Virtual Pilot 3D

If you’re looking for a flight simulator in the first place you’re most likely an aircraft enthusiast who wants to virtually take to the skies and fly planes. Perhaps you’re a future pilot looking to improve your flying skills? Regardless, there are a number of flight simulators in 2017 that will suit your needs. On this site I have picked the 5 most popular and feature packed flight simulators available. Each one has something unique to it and some are better than the others. It can be difficult choosing a flight simulator and often time consuming: searching, downloading, installing and then configuring settings. I can help you spend a lot less searching with the information on this website.

What does a good flight simulator need to consist of? One of the most important things is realistic aircraft. Not just the aesthetics of the planes but more importantly the controls inside of the cockpit. What good is a flight simulator that doesn’t have realistic controls? All of the individual aircraft must have life-like cockpits with controls and instruments that all function just as they would in the real aircraft. That brings us to the next most important thing, how the aircraft responds to external elements such as the wind, time of day and weather. All of these things can affect how an aircraft performs and if it’s not replicated in a flight simulator it won’t feel as realistic. The size of the map where you can fly is also very important, nobody wants to fly within a confined space. A few flight simulators these days have worldwide maps, allowing you to fly literally anywhere in the globe.

The amount of aircraft you can fly as well as the number of airports to take off from and land at is also pretty important; you want to be able to try out different planes to see how they differ, as well as enjoy going to different airports.

Below you can read a brief overview of each flight simulator and if you wish to read more you can click through to a more detailed look at each flight sim. Hopefully you can decide which flight simulator is best for you and hopefully I’ll have made it a little bit easier!

Virtual Pilot 3D

Virtual Pilot 3D

I’ve started with this flight simulator because in my opinion it’s the best flight simulator in 2017. It’s relatively new compared to the others and boasts some pretty amazing features. You have the choice of over 200 aircraft to fly, including commercial planes like Boeing 737’s as well as light aircraft like Cessna’s all the way to military jets and helicopters. There’s really something for everyone here. On top of that there are 25,000 different airports for you to explore. On the topic of exploring, the worldwide scenery package includes the entire globe for you to fly around. Literally anywhere in the world! It uses data from Google Maps 3D and NASA, ensuring excellent accuracy.

The graphics are very good and all of the aircraft look just like the real thing. Inside of the cockpits that realism continues with all of the instruments and controls responding to your input (and external inputs like the weather) just like they would in a real plane.

There is a lot more to this flight simulator and I really recommend that you check it out! To see more about Virtual Pilot 3D click here.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Microsoft Flight Simulator X

This is the flight simulator most people who’ve used flight sims before are most familiar with and with good reason too. MS FSX has been around for a long time, originally appearing in 2006. A lot has gone into making FSX a solid flight simulator and in 2017 it’s still worth a look. One of the big benefits of Microsoft Flight Simulator X is that there are lots of add-ons which include things such as better scenery, more aircraft and more detailed cockpits. Many are available to download for free but the majority are pay ware, meaning you have to pay for them.

The graphics in FSX are very good and it performs well on most computers, depending on the settings. The number of aircraft is pretty good, especially considering you can get additional aircraft from paid add-ons as mentioned previously. One very nice feature of FSX is that it has missions enabling you to perform high risk tasks which can be a whole lot of fun. As well as that, there’s a specific tool that enables you to create your own aircraft which can be a very exciting experience.

Microsoft Flight

Microsoft Flight

Microsoft certainly dominated the flight simulation scene with numerous products. Microsoft Flight is still worth mentioning in 2017, despite it being a little bit different to the traditional flight simulators, like the ones above. The first thing to note is that it’s completely free which is a big plus to many people. The only downside is that development of the game was abandoned in 2012, so no new content has been released since then. On top of that, you can no longer purchase any previous downloadable content, meaning you’re stuck with what you get. Despite this though it has some good features which may catch your eye.

Prepar3D

Prepar3D

Prepar3D is the big boy when it comes to flight simulators. It was created by Lockheed Martin, who you may recognise as the aerospace and security company. This simulator pretty pricey as it’s aimed at professionals who may use it for academic purposes as you can create different scenarios for the simulator to play out. It is not your normal type of flight simulator like Virtual Pilot 3D or FSX but it’s still worth a mention for those looking for something more advanced and different.

One other plus is that many add-ons for FSX are actually compatible with Prepar3D.

X-Plane

X-Plane

X-Plane is another very popular flight simulator in 2017. There’s not as much choice when it comes to aircraft but most of the favourites are on there. All of the scenery is 3D which makes for a very beautiful flying experience. Whilst it is a great flight simulator, a lot of people still prefer Microsoft FSX, perhaps because it has a bigger community and additional features. It’s definitely worth checking out X-Plane though if the others don’t take your fancy.

Hopefully you can decide which flight simulator is best suited to you based on what you want to use it for and what specific features you’re looking for. Of course, it all depends on you as an individual as well as your computing power for running the simulator. I recommend going through to each individual page and seeing more detailed information on each flight simulator, as well as visiting the developer’s site to see what they have to say for themselves.

Here’s to a great year of flying!
